Witch Hunt

I kicked in the door to the hovel. The woman had barely time to scream before I had her in my grasp.

“You stand accused of witchcraft,” Father Seamus said. “You were witnessed giving Emma the Evil Eye. Now she miscarried.”

“I’m just a simple midwife, Father. Were I a witch, you wouldn’t stand a chance against me, would you?”

Kaya sighed. The woman who had joined up seemed distant and alien. The change might as well be death. “I’d rather go on another mission.”

The man nodded. All according to plan.

The Turning Point

He spotted the face familiar from his briefing and removed the safety. His finger trembled on the trigger. Killing a child was difficult, no matter that the moustache and the hair were unmistakable.

Wait a minute. How would any kid have a toothbrush moustache? Johnson hesitated. If he might be delusional, maybe he should abort the mission.

The safety clicked back on. Back in the present, Dennis from next door lived to see another day.
