Scrape away the sun-dried layer to expose the cool damp sand hidden beneath. Hold out one hand, fingers mashed together straight. Stab that hand in until it’s buried to the wrist. Cold solid comfort. Pat down. Pull back. Repeat. Repeat. These caves are where your kind live. Before there is a castle there must be peasants. To grow crops. Breed many children. Some will grow up to labour on castles with moats. If you know your place, you might even find yourself cooking for lords. Dressing ladies. Protecting queens from witches. Rescuing kings from dragons.
Taste-testing food and wine for poison.
A delightful flight of fancy.
Thanks ?
I don’t know why there is a question mark on my first reply to your comment. ?
Love this!
The stark reality of life. To know your place. Good observation in few words.
I would love to read a story about the food taster.
Imagine! We can. Thank you!
Such a cool way to end. Love it!
