Flash Fiction chosen by Jennifer Genest

“Lissa” by Michael Bourne via Tin House

Within the tender light of new lovers waking, “Lissa” encapsulates years of longing, pain, recovery, scars—and hope.

“Gambling One Ridge Away” by Lori White via Camroc Press Review

This compact and sensual piece captures a a glimpse of the spiritual world through the voice of Ojibwe firefighters, and of what it might mean to be human with each other and with our earth.

“Printmaking” by Thea Prieto via The Good Men Project

While trying to recount a memory of a father’s death, poetic prose skates daintily around it. What the character is left with—fear, grief, longing—is shown by a sensual, visceral account of what was.

“Baby Envy” by Rob Jacklosky via Esquire

In just 78 words, this story manages plot, brings emotion and suspense, and delivers a chilled jolt with a seemingly innocent flip of the pronoun switch.

Flash Fiction chosen by Martin P. Chandler

“A Heart Like Jasper’s” by Allison Cooper via Every Day Fiction

This is a very short piece, and one full of heart. Though brief, the description is clear and the emotion very real; definitely worth the read.

“A Gathering of Ashes” by Gustavo Bondoni via Every Day Fiction

A longer flash piece, this one is more contemplative, and a bit sadder. I only recently discovered Gustavo Bondoni’s writing; I look forward to exploring his stuff more.

“Spell” by Laura Clark via Let It Come From the Heart

This is a lovely little piece, inspired by a writing prompt. It beautifully captures the need to be doing something, with the lack of anything to get done.

Flash Fiction chosen by Craig Towsley

“Hold Still, Malcolm” by Jeremy Bruno via Soap Bubbles

The characters share quite a past, but we only see it in glimpses, which is perfect, I think.

“Why Ground Squirrels Left the Trees” by N. E. Chenier via Spec-Fic Motley

This is like some kind of magic spell.

“Stuck in the Past” by Sarah Squires via Precisely 25

Always impressed by how much story this writer packs into only 25 words.

“Attackers Might be Trying to Steal” by Sasha Singer-Wilson via These Five Minutes

Heartache and the cry of loons fit together perfectly. That’s it.

Flash Fiction chosen by Pattyann McCarthy

“Dead Fruit” by Foy S. Iver via Flash! Friday

This story haunts me. The author weaves earthiness and heartbreak in every detail, while a mother desperately clings to hope.

“Bluebirds” by AV Laidlaw via The Angry Hourglass

This is a great story! The imagery is vivid here. The way in which the author weaves magic and war together is fantastic.

“The Fluven & the Belvan” by Rebekah Postupak via Flash! Friday

This story made me laugh. The author weaves made-up words to create a story that really is a story. This was a fun read!

“Dull Silver” by Iskandar Haggarty via Micro Bookends

The juxtaposition here is perfect. The author weaves the years ticking by between what should have been and what really is. A sad and poignant story.

Flash Fiction chosen by B.E. Seidl

“Conjugate “to be”, using complete sentences” by Ani King via freeze frame fiction

An experimental story that explores the limitations of time and order. It will take you on a hellish trip however you choose to read it.

“Michael and Marina Moonwater” by Christopher Blaine via Flash Fiction Magazine

A void created by 46 years of silence is filled in less than 700 words.

“Schmerdloff’s Proposal” by Adam Mac via Garden Gnome Publications

Everything I always wanted to know about toilet paper habits.

“The Woman, Long After” by Fabio Fernandes via Scigentasy

A thought provoking story about scars and tattoos.

Flash Fiction chosen by Grace Black

“Mourning After” by Mark Farley via Unbroken Journal

This is the exact form of micro flash I consume for breakfast. Screw the food pyramid, this is flash built from the ground, layer by layer. Great read.

“The Darkest Blue” by Chris Milam via Maudlin House

Clever turns of phrase and solid prose with a purpose. It’s always a delight to see Milam’s work in print. Clever ink.

“Men at Work #133” by Robert Laughlin via After the Pause

There is lovely juxtaposition in this short bit of prose. A snippet of time that says, ‘read me!’.

“Swollen River” by Fikret Pajalic via Third Point Press

From the title to the ending, everything about this story is executed with deliberate pacing and skill. A joy to read.

Flash Fiction chosen by Bunmi Oke

“The Weird Little Girl” by Carl Steiger via Every Day Fiction

This seemingly harmless piece tossed random, isolated details all along the storyline until the very last line where a bizarre unveiling occurred. What’s more, the pun that the crux of the piece turned out to be was quite a thrill.

“Always Kissing” by IfeOluwa Nihinlola via Litro Magazine

An intriguing tale thriving on familial hypocrisy and social make-believe. The narrative is fierce in action perhaps as much as it provokes the reader’s contemplation.

“Disorder” by Rasha Tayaket via Micro Bookends

What would be more thumbs-up-deserving than the apt single-word caption of this piece is how, all the way through, the writer mentally got me looking the other way!

“The Mapmaker’s Calligraphist Daughter” by Bob Thurber via 50-Word Stories

With this ultra-short piece, the author deftly transcends the constraint of word limit to produce a story way bigger than itself.
