Package delivered. Sender unknown. A woman unraveled its wrapping, placed the contents in front. Her husband watched.
“Aren’t you opening the envelope?” he asked.
“Later,” she said. Her face expressed awe. “I gave this necklace to a girlfriend years back.”
“Someone I know?”
“Don’t think so. She and I went through high school together. Lost touch afterwards.”
The woman read a note. Sighed. “Her husband wrote to tell me of her death.”
“Did you know him?”
“Yes. We all knew each other from school.”
Tears dotted the woman’s face. She couldn’t tell him that the sender was once her lover too.
