Cavepersons

July 1, 2023 3 Comments

By Dan Tremaglio

Today made me proud of my species for once, the way grown-up humans invariably dote over brand-new baby humans, bringing basics by the house in woven baskets unannounced—bread, fruit, hand-me-down onesies, amphetamine. They volunteer to fold laundry or deep-fry a meal. Half of their names I forget or else never knew to begin with. But that’s okay.

We’re fellow bald apes, rearing our wrinkly offspring in wooden caves along the same asphalt river. They can’t wait to meet their newest neighbors and to count their little limbs and confirm the absence of batwings or horns.

It’s instinctual. And very sweet.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Nothing more charming than the naked ape. Great story.

You found a lovely way to express both the warmth and the strangeness of these first days with our little ones. And the warmth and strangeness of being part of a community. 🙂 Congratulations!
