Cosmic Matters

By Denise Diehl

Bella laughed at the black circular object on North Terrace, Adelaide. “It’s not a portal! It’s art.”

Latika stepped forward and stretched out her delicately henna-tattooed hand, mocking her friend. It hummed curiously.

Latika vanished.

Bella screamed.

People turned.

Foot Patrol appeared.

Bella tried to speak but cried too much to make sense. An old woman edged through the crowd and placed her hand on Bella’s arm. “Come, I’ll explain,” she whispered.

“I can’t leave my friend!” Bella sobbed. She glanced down. The woman’s nails bit. She gasped at the henna-tattooed hand. The old woman smiled.

“Hello, Bella. I’ve missed you.”

Oooh a creepy time portal. I like it! And an Aussie setting, too!

      Thanks for your comment.
The sculpture is called One: All that we can see. It represents the ratio suggested by contemporary physicists between the visible and invisible universe: the hypothesis is that 95% of the universe is made up of dark matter and dark energy, leaving only 5% of ‘normal matter’ visible.
Is outside the Australian Space Discovery Centre.

I love a great time-travel, story and this was done so well in just 101 words! Using the henna painted hand as the reveal was brilliant.
