Beads of sweat swam across Emilio’s face, standing over the hot stove in the cramped kitchen at Trama’s Trattoria. The fragrance of sautéing onions, translucent in butter, evoked memory of family and first love back in Calabria.

He stepped out the back door, breathed the cool night air. Cars hissed along Brighton Avenue under buzzing streetlights. He lit a cigarette.

A beautiful young woman stopped. “Got a light?” She reminded him of his mother, and a sudden warmth stirred in his chest. For a moment, he thought it meant something, like home. But she left him empty like everything else here.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Nice! I enjoyed this, especially the moment the lady reminds him of his mother and he thinks it might mean something.

Thank you, Ramona. I appreciate this so much. I went back-and-forth between that last line and another alternate sentence. Glad to see I chose the right one. God bless.
