Sipping whiskey at the bar some time after Mary died, I jumped when she tapped on my shoulder. She hugged me and gave me her new phone number. First and forever, she said with a wink as she linked her pinky with mine. A promise broken too many times.
Once home, I went into the garden and dug a hole in the flower bed with my hands. I ripped the scrap of paper with her number into pieces and buried them in the ground. That night I fell asleep with dirt under my fingernails. In the morning my hands were clean.
Interesting story ?
Some vivid imagery… thought provoking… it left me pondering as I’m sure others… well done…
Yes, thought-provoking. Nicely told.
