Grass Stains on White Lace

October 12, 2023 11 Comments

By Gale Huxley

The morning was dark, wet, and empty, except for us. We wore lace socks and baby doll dresses. My friend, my only friend now, raced and rolled in the grass with me until our white dresses were deliciously scented and stained. When the students, sleepy-eyed and shriller than the birds, walked onto the field, we crept under the rickety bleachers. As we watched their movements, we passed a thin joint from liver-spotted hand to sun-spotted hand, wishing we knew we were young while we were still young and that other people could see our youth now that our skin betrays us.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.
