Open Season

January 14, 2024 15 Comments

By Hilary Ayshford

“Come on, Fergus, let’s do it!” Callum is quivering with excitement.

“I don’t know.” Fergus rubs his rump reflectively against a gnarled pine trunk. “Two against one. It’s not very sporting.”

“Yeah, but he’s got a gun.”

“True. Okay, follow me.”

It’s all over in a flash of razor-sharp hooves and twelve-point antlers.

Between them they pick up the body and carry it back to the truck. With a flick of his head, Fergus tosses the bloody remains of the hunter onto the bonnet.

Soon a bevy of does, wide-eyed and long-lashed, emerges from the thicket to admire the latest trophy.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Hi Hilary, I enjoy the tales where the roles are reversed. It is a true testament to the underdogs that prevail. Nicely done. I had just one thought for improvement. And it is only that that my thoughts are being offered to you for possible improvement of the piece. Thanks for sharing.

In your first line, I wonder if it should read, “…Callum quivers with excitement.” instead of “Callum is quivering with excitement.”
