Stella Tells Me

October 23, 2025 10 Comments

By Litsa Dremousis

Stella tells me, “Life is about choices, not chance,” and I stifle a laugh because she makes awful choices but always gets away with it. She’ll say the pizzas cost sixty bucks when they only cost fifty and then pocket the change. In college, she sold oregano to stoners and stole mopeds, then traveled to San Francisco with the profits.

If our moms weren’t lifelong best friends, would we talk? She rescues and rehomes abused animals, so probably. We’re all better than the sum of our worst parts, I think. Still, when we’re together, I keep an eye on my wallet.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

I love the redemptive detail of Stella rescuing and rehoming abused animals.
What a creative way to express the complexity of people we might at times find insufferable!

We all have one redeeming feature. Though sometimes it’s well hidden. Great story.
