By Alyson Tait
The ocean and its jagged rocks conspired to keep me stranded underneath this lighthouse. They even stole the memory of my arrival. I only remember climbing across the outer boulders, salty residue rubbing against my swollen skin.
The lighthouse was mercifully unlocked.
I tried to reach the top and send a signal. And I walked for hours before crawling back down the stairs to collapse on the bed.
Fish and stars are my only company.
The conspiracy is purgatory; the island is a frigid nightmare. If I jump into the water, will I go to heaven or my own personal hell?
Thoughtful and mysterious. Nicely done.
I liked the dark Romanticism. It seems like the start of a larger work that I would like to read.
A conundrum. Suspenseful. Well composed.
