Telling

August 10, 2026 2 Comments

By Marcia Yudkin

We sat at adjacent corners of a table at Legal Seafoods. No one else within earshot. She pulled my copy of Edith Wharton’s The Mother’s Recompense from her bag. “I loved it,” she said, undoubtedly pleased about our mother-daughter book discussion.

“Especially the scene where the priest advises not to hurt her daughter over things in the past that can’t be changed,” my mother offered. “Why cause suffering with no redeeming purpose?” Not the commentary I had hoped.

I will tell her anyway. The block of stone between us will move—somehow.

I will tell.

I will tell.

I did not.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Nicely done. I have lived through critical parts of this story.
