The Day the Sun Went Out

It was the middle of July when the Sun went out.

Total darkness enveloped the Earth. Radio and TV broadcasts across the world were interrupted by an alien message.

We are the Virj. Since its creation, your planet has been one of many taking part in the Galactic Best Planet competition. We regret to inform you that Earth has failed to reach the quarter-finals. You don’t learn from your continual wars. You are destroying your planet’s ecosystem. Your civilisation is systemically inhumane.

We have turned off your Sun. It will not be turned back on again. Thanks for taking part. Goodbye.

What a great unique concept! You should run with this and turn it into a book or novella.

Well, Jan – if you think about it, we can’t be sure that we aren’t part of some cosmic experiment or competition, whether alien or divine.

Thanks to you and the others for their positive and encouraging comments.

I don’t think we would even get to the quarterfinals.
Or if it was called the ‘Galactic Adequate Alliance’, maybe then.
