The Fall Out

September 23, 2024 5 Comments

By Alison McBain

Each coin is counted when we board the train—Charon has a conductor’s cap perched jauntily over the gleaming yellow bone of his forehead. We’re still a bit shocked at the suddenness of it all, as the locomotive chugs past teeming ghost skyscrapers that have been blasted to nothingness. The platforms at each stop are overfull, and the train cars stretch to an infinity behind us.

I bump into the Supreme Leader whose order launched the nukes, and perhaps I overstep, but I have never been accused of subtlety. My fellow passengers cheer loudly when I punch him in the face.

Excellent. I could visualize the scene. Too often these days I think this can be our future reality.
