The Hero

By Phil Temples

“Do you mind telling me why you did it?”

The arsonist shrugged his shoulders. “Just for once in my life I’d like to make a difference. I’d like to be the guy who rescues the little old lady. I’d like to walk down the street in a fireman’s uniform and have little kids run along side and salute me. I just want a little self-respect.”

The fireman looked at the man, dumbstruck.

“That’s what you think the job is about?” He took off his helmet and shoved it into the arsonist’s hands. “Here. Knock yourself out, hero.” Then he walked away.

Nice story, Phil! Love the way the fireman responded to a delusion of grandeur.

In very few words you have delivered recognised thought processes behind arson. Very clever.
