The Rescue Pup

June 11, 2024 23 Comments

By Lisa H. Owens

The pup bounded through the meadow, chasing his nemesis, a crusty tennis ball that had seen better days.

He pounced upon the wretched fiend, latched onto Ball with his oversized puppy paws—sunk his teeth into it for good measure. Then he plopped down to smooth its faded yellow surface with his floppy pink tongue.

A beseeching voice in the distance broke his intense grooming of Ball’s wayward fuzz. “C’MON, BOY, FETCH!”

He ignored the voice, only arising on three unsteady legs to begin his lopsided run homeward (leaving Ball behind), when he heard the magic words.

“Tripod! Who wants bacon?”

Lovely story. And who doesn’t love the rescue implication? And the name Tripod.

    Brilliant!

Perfect name choice to portrayed in a less obvious way a physical difference.

    Rescue dogs for the win!

(I swear that I could almost feel the texture of that old tennis ball…)

Thank you, Joana! Rescues are always winners in my book. I appreciate your supportive comments. The thoughts of licking a tennis ball made me cringe. Kind of a visceral fingernails on a chalkboard reaction!

The scene is vivid in my mind. The name Tripod conveys what was probably a heartbreaking back story for the little dog that’s happily been rescued. Well done.
