Toothache

Toothache

By Ben Nein

The girl huddled behind the creature in the alley when Gil Hadrian came to apprehend her. She had been stealing gold caps from people for months, to melt them for cash. Who knew she kept the teeth, or was a Conjurer?

The golem, made entirely of burned, cavity-ridden molars, lumbered towards Gil one calciferous leg at a time. His cudgel broke off its head, but didn’t stop it.

Eventually, Gil stood sweat-soaked, amid an array of scattered teeth. Thankfully, the girl had used all her power on one conjuring. She came along quietly.

Still, Gil couldn’t eat candy for weeks.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

It’s sheer heck being a golem hunter–bad for the teeth, too! Read like a fairy tale. Liked it!

Thanks for the feedback. I’m hoping that Gil Hadrian will continue to get some attention. He’s a recurring character, and I’ve got a few longer pieces out there in submission land right now. Feel free to follow me on Twitter, or check out my website if you’d like to keep up to date with what’s going on. I can’t link the website or the comments won’t post, but it is attached to my Twitter account (@neinwrites).

Love this – especially “Eventually, Gil stood sweat-soaked, amid an array of scattered teeth.” How often would you ever read that sentence?
