Wedding Shoes

January 7, 2024 11 Comments

By Valerie Hughes

I know what my brother will say because I can’t forget the Saturdays that Mom dragged us to the shoe store. He paraded his elven feet. Mine belonged to ogres. Huge and terrible, despite my rituals of raking the soles with sugar scrubs.

I tentatively began wearing flip-flops in college—for the shower only.

Now, I lift my dress’s butter white hem to show the pearly heels.

“Am I falling out of them?”

What glazes his eyes is a calm untethered from the past. “Your feet are so small,” he remarks without maliciousness, without his old games, without everything I remember.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Cream of the crop from this week’s batch! Your work at the sentence level is obvious and pays off. How many times did you rewrite this?
