What a Waste

September 4, 2024 27 Comments

By Jo Gatenby

No TV; waste of money, Mama says. Only textbooks; fiction wasted time.

I scavenge firewood to cook homegrown peas fer food, the husked shells boiled fer poke salad. Mama says, “No point wasting.”

Neighbor brung us a scrawny chicken what got too old for laying. Mama kept every single plucked feather for quilt stuffing afore stretching the meat to last four meals. Then she stewed the bones fer soup. Mama don’t hold with waste.

When a drunk driver kilt Mama, I sat with her body. Then I sighed and went to sharpen my knives. “Waste not, want not,” Mama always said.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

I liked the twist too. Sitting there, expecting something poignant, when what follows is actually slightly horrific :-0 Amazing for an initial publication. Well done 😉
