Winter Love

August 9, 2023 21 Comments

By Sherry Morris

We wake to a world white as our hair. Creak-crack downstairs. You soft-shuffle into leopard-print ski boots; I don my best Carmen Miranda woolly hat. We throw open the door. Whoop like school kids on an unexpected snow day. Helter-skelter down the drive, leaving aches and pains behind. Our hearts beat young. We’re fearless now, unafraid to fall. It won’t hurt this second time.

Later, you cook my favorite dish, although you don’t like liver. I find your reading glasses. We snuggle in front of the fire. Find slow magic under the duvet. Promise every day will be a snow day.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

This is so beautiful! And skilfully written – you kept us as sure of your protagonists safety on the snow and ice as they were so that we could enjoy their snow day too. Much to admire, but especially ‘you soft-shuffle into leopard-print ski boots’.
    a) brilliant imagery and b) she’s so cool I love her! Thank you for a lovely story.
