A Ballad for the Post-Lockdown Blues

December 13, 2025 3 Comments

By Teodora Vamvu

The air in the park smells earthy, like overbaked vegan banana bread—so many damn banana breads—and green, like the forest-perfumed disinfectant I used to furiously scrub everything.

A mother barks to her child, “Get back now, Lulu,” and I crack a full-toothed smile. The sound of others nearby is like a harmonized ballad to my lonely ears.

Scaly bark catches on my T-shirt, and I imagine the strained cotton threads holding on to each other like best friends reunited after enforced social distancing.

People pass by and eye me curiously, likely wondering, Is she hugging a tree?

I am.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.
