With the toes of his highly polished wing-tips just touching the painted yellow line, he watches listlessly as one train after another speeds past carrying barely awake commuters off to jobs most of them hate.
A cockroach makes a mad dash through footfalls—some of them arrivals and some departures—lawlessly, it scurries across the edge of the platform, dropping over into the pit.
The man half-heartedly contemplates following the scofflaw insect’s lead.
Later, on the subway ride home, he decides that tomorrow he’ll quit his boring job, leave the city, and join a carnival in the Midwest for the summer.
We’ve all had days like these. Potent piece of writing.
Mass exodus from the cities. All aboard!
Good stuff! Sign me up to run the ring toss.
Liked the way you compared the hero’s escape to that of a cockroach. Does this mean that everyone and everything has an inner desire to escape the Rat Race? Very good story.
Scofflaw insect! lol
