A Dog’s Breakfast

August 19, 2026 7 Comments

By Kerri

I lived alone, eating pancakes and sipping my coffee by the kitchen window. One day, my allergy-prone neighbour dropped by, asking if I could take in his dog. I’d never owned one before. Would I end up making a complete mess of things? Bob assured me he’s a good boy, trained as a pup. I took the dog. Now, each morning, my sweet-as-syrup best buddy sits on my lap like a pat of butter—soft and warm—watching me with coffee-coloured saucer eyes as I stroke his honey-golden fur. Something unexpected happens: an inner hunger, long unacknowledged, is finally completely satiated.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

The breakfast -dog connection was imaginative and promoted the warm sentiment of the piece.
