“Let’s go for a walk. Just you and me.”
Ray lifted his head from his knees. “Now?”
Laughter erupted from within the house, spilling out with the light onto the darkening lawn. Penny waited until the noise died down into a muffled rumble. “When else, silly? Come on.”
He continued staring at the ground. Sighing, Penny bent over and whispered, “There’s something I want to show you.”
She led him to the small, freshly dug mound with a makeshift headstone. Tears flowed again as he hugged her tightly. A small smile and a hug later, she whispered, “Sorry for your loss.”
