A Simple Hike

A Simple Hike

By M D Smith IV

“Holy crap.” I stood frozen, facing that beast with needle-pointed horns. Steam poured from his nostrils. He lowered his head to charge. I yanked my backpack from my shoulders, laying it on the narrow mountain path. I needed my gun.

The pack slipped in loose rocks, tumbled toward a gorge below.

“Un-friggin-believable,” watching it fall. Hope to God that mountain goat doesn’t charge. Perhaps I can retreat in the powdery dirt on the trail. It’d be slippery if this stuff were wet.

Then I saw lightning flash in dark clouds above, and thunder bellowed.

I only thought it couldn’t get worse.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Nothing worse than a cliffhanger with a mountain goat. You know it’s bound to go down… Nice one, this was!

Presumably the thunder and lightning happened because of his swearing!

Yup, the only time that it can’t get any darker is when you’re dead… or in this case when the ram charges during a torrential downpour. Great story, it let me think up my own ending based on your visuals – thanks.

After I wrote it, I decided to see what happened next. Thunderstorm, busted ankle, broken phone…some people have all the luck. Still working on the short story extended version.

Good suspense! I can’t imagine being in that situation. Another reason to carry I suppose!

Based on the start and how you handled it, I have no doubt that you’ll throw in a good spin to provide a heart-pounding end. Keep thinking ‘n’ pounding those keys…

Nice cliffhanger, especially starting with a horned beast. My mind went to sci-fi as I imagine you wanted it to. Nice job.
