A Summoning

October 10, 2023 3 Comments

By Jordan Borges

In the darkness the floor looked black. Thom knew it was actually blue—this being his preferred school bathroom—but he couldn’t shake the feeling he was standing on a void.

“Andrew said he saw him here,” he whispered.

Caleb’s flashlight beamed onto the middle stall. Thom stepped next to him.

“Ready?”

“Yeah.”

The brothers closed their eyes and spun. “Let him in, let him in,” they intoned. Flashlight like a lighthouse. Silence when they stopped.

A pipe’s sudden bang sent them scurrying into the corner, Thom’s arms spreading wide to shield his brother from the terror they’d so recklessly conjured.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

This is just another example of stories that are published that make no sense to me. What did they conjure up?

Love it, great window into the wild mind and imagination of youth.
