Advance Guard

By David Pela

The Princess gazed in stony silence out the tower window. Her ladies-in-waiting bustled in and out of the room. The servants padded noiselessly about. The wind shrieked through the trees.

On the road, in the distance, she saw two horsemen approaching. One wore a joker’s hat and the other was dressed in black.

The joker leaned toward the man in black to speak.

She imagined what he might be saying: “I’ve had enough of this; can’t we quit? I’ve been used and abused. I never know who to trust or believe.”

The Princess sighed and watched. Life was indeed a joke.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

A story-within-a-story, with the main character making up the second story in her imagination. Or is she reading their minds? Liked it.

When Bob Dylan wrote “All Along The Watchtower” he had the closing verse as the beginning. When he recorded it, he put it at the end. I wanted to try it in his original order.
