Affection Receipts Required

August 15, 2025 2 Comments

By Ray Calder

We moved through the days like swimmers in different lanes, each with a private logic for staying afloat. I surfaced, gasping for air, wanting you; you dove for the hush at the bottom. The Relationship Compliance App blinked: “Submit Affection Receipts.” The kitchen meter chirped, “Distance Detected. Please Schedule a Reconnection Audit.” Your silences were your shelter. My talking, a kind of trespass. I made rules; you dissolved them. The fridge displayed Our Intimacy Score. The light stuttered, the app pinged, and we obeyed in silence. I needed nearness; you needed separation. The paperwork piled up. We sank, pending deletion, together.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

I agree with Mary. This is a wonderful piece about a couple breaking apart because they want different things, swim in different lanes. Very moving.
