After the Fall

After the Fall

By James Shaffer

I was far away, but I saw him fall. It was on News TV. He didn’t fall far, but far enough. They said he landed wrong. Maybe he didn’t fall. Maybe he jumped. But it looked like he fell, the way he seemed to float off the ledge, head first. They named him in the report, showed his photo. I leaned closer to the TV.

It wasn’t the first time I’d seen him fall. The first time was in a park, on a slide. He tripped on the last step. Fell eight feet. Twisted in the air. I caught him then.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Really liked this story and your delivery, it kept my attention to the last period. And, you’re right, many times we only get one second chance.

Succinct, brief, yet details of a back story flood my imagination. Deluge very much appreciated.
