After the Funeral

September 12, 2024 3 Comments

By Wendy Markel

Thirty years Barry worked with Mary. He’d miss her cheerful chatter.

There would be refreshments at the pub, the celebrant had said. Barry waited, letting the family go ahead. He appreciated the strong Yorkshire tea and sandwiches, but the conversation dismayed him.

“I’m expecting twenty-five grand,” the pink-hoodied youngster said, grinning. “It just needs a clean-up.”

So rude. Mary kept her place pristine.

And everyone was laughing.

“You’re a disgrace, after her money. You have no respect.”

The Porsche owners’ club members exchanged glances as Barry stalked out.

Music was coming from the snug. Coincidence, Barry thought. ‘James Last,’ Mary’s favourite.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.
