I am awake in bed listening to the wind as it sweeps through the trees outside my bedroom and the rain as it splashes with rage across the window. My wife’s side of the bed is cold and empty like a desert in the night. She packed a bag but never returned. I wipe the tears away from my eyes as I lie in the darkness, sick with exhaustion. We’d been together for fifteen years, but cancer took her from me in less than one. I hear the baby crying and go to her crib. I’m raising her, all alone now.
“cold and empty like a desert in the night”… very vivid and touching. thanks.
Thank you!
Authentic enough in tone to be autobiographic. I hope it is not, but if it is for you, or for anyone who reads it, you have my deepest sympathy. The success of the writing is its ability to stir this kind of response.
Thanks for the comment. I’m glad you liked the story!
Very moving and surreal story.
It makes me want to know more. Sounds sincere. …Real.
Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed the story!
Wrenches the heart. Well done J.J
So few words, so much said. Beautiful in its simplicity
