An Unroofed Home

November 29, 2021 9 Comments

By M Black

The sky hung heavy, drooping as if the weight of carrying the stars each night had become unbearable. As a consequence, turbid fog now snaked through the streets so thick that even the piercing mews of roaming alley cats were dampened. Only amber emittents from regular street lamps provided any sort of light. The moon hadn’t so much as tried to make an appearance.

But it didn’t matter that it was missing. The gnarly tree roots in the city square were her cradle, the muttering of the leaves her lullaby. Counting shadows instead of sheep, she breathed a sigh of relief.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Lovely use of adjectives. It might be the start of a mystery novel or an adventure. It grabbed my attention very quickly and finished with a sigh.

Thanks, I tried to leave it as open-ended as I could – you’re right, perhaps I could expand it…

An especially wonderful opening line! Its tone is then echoed in the last. Nice work!
