Another Year

March 23, 2022 5 Comments

By Jodelle Marx

The fanny pack pouch where Adam’s phone should be was unzipped.

He remembered the night in flashes: the band counting down—diez, nueve, ocho; beer bottles and sloshing mojitos; a girl sliding in for a New Year’s kiss.

That girl.

“Yo!” Adam yelled to Finn. “My phone! It’s gone!”

Finn stared at Adam before comprehending. “Check your pockets!”

Adam shook his head. “I did!”

“How about your pack?”

“No!” Adam’s voice cracked.

He searched the crowd for Nico, who mirrored the tipsy sway of two strappy-bikinied girls.

His friends were useless. Five minutes in, and 2022 was already a shit show.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

This is lovely. The sparse language highlights the loss which is more annoying than horrible.

To me the story is a new years resolution that is clearly embedded in my mind now. “Keep my shit together”. “Don’t be an Adam”.

A great start to an adventurous novel, reminds me of the John Grisham story I’m currently reading. I’m on the edge of my seat, what happens next….
