Asymmetrical Love

Asymmetrical Love

By MaryEllen Carr

“Did you know that a woman’s breasts are usually different sizes?” he mentioned while dressing. The hum of crickets emerged as The Late Show faded to commercial.

She smiled a satisfied smile.

“The left one is usually smaller.” A pause as he wedged feet into shoes. He turned and continued, “To leave room for the heart.”

“But my tits are perfect,” she replied, running her manicured nails around them for emphasis.

“That’s because your heart is so small,” leaked from his throat, somewhere between a grunt and a laugh.

“Or maybe,” she thought, smile deepening, “I don’t have one at all.”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Beautiful phrases used in any phase of a relationship can lead to trouble or a better understanding of love. Good job, Maryellen.

I liked your story and the way you presented it, well done. I do have a question though, why didn’t she scream it as opposed to thinking it?

      Hey b,
Now I wouldn’t want to ruin anyone else’s interpretation but her silence reflects her power, an almost sinister nature. I pondered having him say that line, then a scream from might have been appropriate. If I missed that mark I would love to know.

      Thanks.

Thanks for your answer. I missed the angle you’ve explained. I was more involved in his part of the interaction and I underestimated her part.

Really liked it – but how sinister. Why mention breast size? Creepy.
I may be wrong, but this influenced my reading of the rest.

      Hi MEF,

I have to say that this dialogue pretty much came to me. I found it intriguing and wrote the story around it. Her unusually perfect bosom is a contrast to their unequal commitment to the relationship. They both know it. They both get something, sure, but she gets more.
So maybe sinister is a stretch, a prejudice on my part to someone who acts this way.
Thanks, for the query. I hope this helps you, I know it helps me to be a better storyteller.
