At the Bottom of a Grocery List

June 28, 2025 3 Comments

By Margaret Charlton

Chocolate

White Tea Pomegranate

Coconut Milk

Eggs

Chicken Breast

Peanut Butter

Blueberries

I buy blueberries so the lady at the register thinks I’m healthy, but I cannot stomach them anymore. They have long turned sour over the last years with a clinging taste of youth and innocence that mixes like a baby bump plump babe.

She tells me the blueberries are sweet this year and juicier than ever.

I agree, but I will not know for certain as they will rot away in my fridge instead of my stomach. A broken reminder, a fragment of yesteryear left behind in the cold.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Great story! Loved how the title also played very well into the story itself.
