Awake

August 3, 2021 6 Comments

By Liam Ashby

Pain was suddenly a fuzzy cloud, out of reach. I was lying at an unfamiliar angle, impossible in my old bed with the stiff mattress.

A bright light engulfed me, and I could sense little else. Like the light had taken away my ability to hear more than the hum of muffled voices, and no minute smell or taste ever seemed to activate the delicate hairs in my nose.

An instant later, a cacophony of noises and an explosion of pain wracked me. The light softened very slightly.

“He’s awake!” announced the doctor. “How long was he gone?”

“Three. Three seconds dead.”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Thank you, but it really happened to me. Perhaps not in as many words.
