Birthdays

By Israela Margalit

On her first birthday she wanted a banana. On her fifth birthday she wanted a bicycle. On her tenth birthday she wanted to be taller. On her sixteenth birthday she wanted her mother to leave her alone. On her twenty-fifth birthday she wanted Tom. On her forty-first birthday she wanted sex. On her fifty-second birthday she wanted a massage. On her sixty-third birthday she wanted another grandchild. On her seventy-fifth birthday she wanted the phone to ring. When she turned ninety she tired of bananas but she ate one all the same because that was the only thing she could chew.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Beautiful, a life lived full circle, is a life well lived! Really enjoyed that!

I really enjoyed this. Life goes by so quickly that it is, ironically, a good topic for flash fiction. You did a great job bringing her life full circle.

Great summary of life, although a bit sad too.
