By Duncan Bourne
Sunday morning my radio came on. The newsman was panicking about a hole under the Atlantic.
I got up to pee, flicked the kettle on, washed, and went out for a smoke.
A phone-scrolling neighbour saw me.
“Duncan, have you heard?”
“’Course I have. What?”
“There are massive waves. The ocean is sinking.”
“Woah, I mean damn!”
She asked, “Will we die?”
“Dunno. We’re inland.”
Mouth gaping, she went back inside while I stayed to puff.
She despairs about everything: famine, and warming, and nukes, and inflation, and I need some breakfast.
What can I do? I need to eat.
Good read. Don’t worry about the ills of the world. Just worry about yourself
Yes. Good piece.
One must not despair about everything.
God handles everything
Spirit animal. The larger disasters are so far out of our control. Breakfast we can manage.
Much appreciated comments. I read them after eating.
I like this! Felt authentic. And now I want a full novel on what happens next 🙂
Much relate to the ending line. Exactly what I will say when news broadcast is broadcasting threats from China the nth time and the ugly politicians are apparently intimidating electorate for votes, again.
Great story.
Humourous, as well as being real. One person has an internal focus, while the other’s is very much external.
