Breathing My Last

September 30, 2023 29 Comments

By Nidhi Javalagi

Months after my death, I’m still tethered to our home, invisible, as grief always is. My last shocked inhale still stuck in my throat as I helplessly watch you choke on grief. So much of love is habit, I realise, as I see you keep laying out plates for two. The teacups, however, remain untouched. You always refused to make tea, claiming I made it better somehow. I’d roll my eyes and comply, reminding you to blow on it.

The day you make yourself some, the breath finally whooshes out of me and over your cup. It’s time to let go.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Made me smile – thank you! I love the understated way the emotion comes across, and how the one left behind finally and quietly comes to terms with their loss.

    Hello Nidhi,
Left me breathless. Story built slowly to the perfect ending–release for the deceased and the mourner.
