Breathing

February 6, 2023 8 Comments

By Mitch Weil

James had never feared his breath before, but listening to the wheeze that escaped his lips as he cowered beneath his bed terrified him. The bedroom door creaked open, and the booted feet that had pounded so ominously up the stairs treaded quietly on the carpeting. The change in volume seemed an attempt to break the promise of violence, but with each step toward his bed, James squeezed his lungs tighter. His breath felt locked inside, and as the burning in his chest intensified, James knew it was only a matter of time before one traitorous puff would give everything away.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Npt the monster under the bed but the monster approaching it. It gets our imaginations working. Well done!

Nice build-up of tension. Should be trod rather than treaded though… Lovely otherwise 🙂
