Burn the Witch

September 8, 2018 6 Comments

Burn the Witch

By Ella Jones

A scream pierced the bustle of the marketplace, drawing confused looks from the locals hawking their wares. Knowing smiles quickly followed as a familiar acrid smell filled the air.

Smoke rose above the stalls and the crowd eagerly made their way to the courtyard. “Burn the witch!” echoed round the cloisters, mixing with shrieks as tender flesh blistered.

The shrill cry of a child rang out and the people turned. “Mummy!” the little girl screamed hysterically, desperately pushing past the bloodthirsty crowd.

She was quickly removed and shielded from the scene, but not before she saw the flames engulf her mother.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

So many works of American Literature come to mind. Painful.

Horrific ending. Good example of our extreme cruelty to one another. Liked it.

Utterly nasty, just like burning – witches or heretics. Many children must have seen a parent, uncle, grandparent, burn.
We have to remember it, but don’t want to.
    Many thanks.

Very well written, and yes I am quite sure captures a scene that has played out far too many times in history.
