The stop sign swings out, lights strobing on the approaching bus. I slow to a halt. The door opens and a single tiny rider disembarks. Clad in pink dress and sparkly sneakers, she scampers around the front of the bus, stopping to wave goodbye from the middle of the street.
“Bye, Sam!” her voice pipes high and sweet, a wind chime on the breeze, as she dances backwards toward her driveway and her waiting mother.
The driver’s hand extends in farewell, then draws back the stop sign. Passing him, I wave, too, and we share a smile in the afternoon sun.
This sweet little story conjured up a whole era of memories.
Me too, when I saw it happen in front of me, thanks Nicki, so glad it resonated.

Hello Tara,
Nice. Brought back a memory of my bus driver scolding me for not looking both ways before crossing the boulevard
So simple yet so impactful! I really enjoyed the story.
