He carried his snoozing granddaughter to the house, her young arms wrapped around his wrinkled neck. Her head lay on his fragile shoulder. He smiled softly as he felt her youthful heart beating new life against his withering heart.
“Are you awake my little warrior princess?”
She sleepily mumbled an answer as a tear slid down the old man’s cheek.
The girl’s mother sat on the porch, crying. She reached out, collecting her slumbering child from his weary arms.
“Did you tell her?” she asked.
“I couldn’t. I’m sorry.”
The ominous church bells started tolling, and he gave his final hug.
I enjoyed this quiet story about life and death.
