Caring

By Mumba

My feet freeze against the sidewalk as I spot a boy crying across the street.

The boy looks ten and homeless. Dirt has stolen the colour of his skin. He isn’t alone: two boys who look like him stand with him, offering comfort. I’m not alone: tens of people walk around me.

The morning sun is vicious. Everyone can see the boys. No one approaches them.

I consider giving them some loose change. It’s all I can think to give. But I don’t want to pretend I care. I look away and resume walking towards my office. I hope heaven’s real.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Beautiful! This story grips my heart.
The words are captivating and the truth in them all is devastating. “I hope heaven’s real.”

I like the idea of the story and the brevity with which it is expressed.
