She didn’t think about it, simply slipped quietly into reverse. He’d let her use the rusting van to run church errands as long as she didn’t travel any distance, but she’d known the first time he twisted her arm behind her back—and said it was God’s will—that one day she would go too far. He did yelp when she backed up, and there was a nasty thump, but she just blinked and shifted into first. She half expected the hailstones suddenly pocking the grimy windshield to turn into a plague of frogs when she accelerated into the gaping night.
