When you live with mice you learn to keep everything in the refrigerator.
He remembers, standing as he is now, when he was a child. Holding the refrigerator door open. Staring inside. Considering. Until his mother would shout, “You’re letting the cold air out!”
Inside he sees wrinkled packets of colorful condiments, little sugars, individually wrapped Saltines, and half a loaf of bread.
His mom was a resourceful cook: she could make something out of nothing. Although he has nothing, he knows he can make a sandwich with pickle relish, mayo, and a dab of mustard. And for dessert, sugared Saltines.
Nice bit of one person’s nostalgia. Liked this one a lot.
