Compromised

September 25, 2025 3 Comments

By Kristina Warlen

The vault door opened, revealing the last seed pod. Daphne cradled it like a relic, its fractured surface faintly pulsing. “Everything depends on you now,” she whispered.

The AI caretaker flickered on. “Genetic integrity compromised. Containment protocol advised.”

She planted it anyway. The soil, though brittle and irradiated, welcomed the pod like it remembered.

Rain fell two nights later, lapis and slightly sweet. Under violet moons, a sprout emerged. It twitched, not from weather but will. Leaves pulsed in language. She leaned closer.

The AI’s warning echoed. Roots surfaced, writhed, withdrew. Something hungry stirred. Not plant. Not entirely.

She reached anyway.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.
