Cornerstone

By Nicole Byers

I sit atop a cliff, with nothing to my name but a handful of marbles. I roll them between my fingers, the gentle clink of glass intermingling with the whisper of ebbing waves. Throw them away, those turquoise waters say. My grip tightens as I think of how much time it took to collect them. Years—no, decades. Under bridges, within a leviathan’s rib cage, some nestled among the clouds, others wrest from chaos itself. But it’s not until now that I realize how heavy they are. How unnecessary, too.

So I cast them, one by one, into the receding waves.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

How poetic. And what a fitting title. Well done.

It so reminds me of the heavy burdens we all carry. When we finally drop them we are so much better to carry on.

I like this story of finally dropping the heavy weights we carry with us!
