Things were rolling along nicely in the doubles’ competition when HD’s team-mate turned on him, her bluntness leaving him concussed in sweltering heat. He struggled dizzily from his prone position to perch on a wall from which he could see her mount the makeshift podium to scoop the prize from the presiding royal.
“Traitor,” the Egg and Spoon race umpire grated. His report of the infringement was overruled. Showing equal measures of concern and contempt, he ignored her steely gaze and pointed back up the hill at her swaying partner.
HD fell before either sun-toasted squaddies or WAG clothes-horses could help.
Very nice, Perry. I especially like the ending.
Ha! Cute story.
